I don't know if this is common or what, but it shocked me, and I would =like to know more about it. I had thought that only an eophyll was presen=t in the first growth cycle of germinated seed, but now I have 2 instance=s of secondary leaves growing out as well.

1 Of 10 seeds of A flavum planted on 10/29/06, all germinated by 11/19/0=6. On 12/20/06, I noticed that in 2 instances, small secondary leaves wer=e growing up alongside the eophylls. These looked exactly like the eophyl=l but smaller. When the plants went dormant in late January, tubers were =harvested, but no difference was seen in these 2 versus the rest.

2 34 seeds of A consanguineum were planted on 11/30/06, of these, 31 had=germinated by 1/12/07. On 3 21/07, I noticed secondary growth on 3 of th=ese. As of yesterday, 6 plants have shown secondary growth. 4 plants have=1 extra leaf, 1 has 2 , and 1 has 3 extra leaves. These do not look like=the eophylls, but are very long and narrow, looking like blades of grass=, and quite small compared to the eophyll. These plants are all still in =active growth.

So far, seeds of 8 other species I have germinated have not shown any of=these extra growths.

Is this something that frequently occurs, or is it possibly an effect of=my growing conditions? I have them under lights (12 hours on) at a fairl=y cool temperature of about 60-62 F.

George
