Last year there was a brief exchange of view on the effect of Uromyces wh=ere
I took the position that it was not reasosnable to destroy a large portio=n
of one's colection, or the whole thing if one acquired an infection in on=e's
garden.
I urged the use of acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) at least on a trial bas=is
stating that it had been useful to me in combating infections in iris, ci=ted
a couple of articles (as I remember) on the use of aspirin and SAR Syste=mic
Acquired Resistance) and mentioned that some of my A. triphyllum s showed
rather severe infections and that I had sprayed the leaves with a solutio=n
of 2 325 mg. aspirins in a gallon of water and given them a drench of t=he
same.
I can now report that both sets of plants have come up this year, show no
signs of the former infection and have doubled in size. I am delighte=d
since both plants had been purchased on eBay and were of a form I had not
had before. Neither set of plants was moved from the site in which the
infection showed up.
If the infection had showed in plants I had had for a while, I might have
moved them to an area not quite so wet, with more sun and air circulation=,
but since I didn't feel that the infection had arisen from within my gard=en,
or that I had gotten the infection from windblown spores, I did not regar=d
this as necessary.
The acronym SAR has been supplanted by another, recently, with a similar
meaning (ISR) induced systemic resistance, giving the term a slightly
different emphasis if one wants to search the net using key words for ot=her
articles on this topic. . Adam Fikso Zone 5a, in Glenview, IL
