I think the answer is excellent drainage not too wet in winter and very =
dry in summer. I have seen the plants in the wild in both Crete and =
Turkey and none were growing in areas where they would ever be subject =
to frost. They do however have scorching summers followed by autumn =
rains.
I have one of mine in the garden growing under a hawthorn tree and from ==
one tuber it is now a clump and is about to produce five flowers. The =
others I grow in the greenhouse. All get a few degrees of frost, perhaps =
down to 25f and so hardiness is not a problem with me. The outside =
plants put up shoots in the spring whereas the more protected ones in =
the greenhouse produce them in autumn. These plants sag a little when it ==
is cold but recover as the days warm up.The inside plants flowered mid =
May.
