Pascal. I think that your information just saved many of us a lot of ti=me.
Now nobody has to do that work. You've already done it. Reliable
information about what does NOT happen or does NOT influence outcomes sav=es
time, money, and effort exploring those dead ends.

>From your observations, do you have any best guesses about what DOES
influence length of dormancy? Is it likely to be something that's easily
researched-- or something requiring a fuly-equipped university laboratory
specializing in the chemistry of molecular genetics? Even so, there may=be
some of us who do have access to such laboratories, perhaps on a part-tim=e
basis.

To put it differently--If you had $1000 to spend on the problem, what wo=uld
you do? To put a different question to you-- (not directly related to
taxonomy), but to learning how to grow these things, and you had the sum =of
$1000 dollars to do that with, what would you do? What species or group
would you select to work with? and why? Or would you choose to do someth=ing
quite different from what I've proposed. Suppose you had less money?

If it's not clear yet, where some of my thinking is going-- I can imagin=e
this group funding (a) small research project(s) through tax-exempt
donations by its members. I can imagine that it should not be too esoter=ic
in its conception, more horticultural rather than an advanced molecular
study.
Most of us have been baffled sometimes about how to best grow arisaemas-=-
whether we are in Denmark, Italy, Indiana, or Georgia (U.S.). Fifty of u=s x
20.00 = 1000. I understand that it is not too difficult to get sanction=ed
for tax-exempt status in the U.S. Some of us might be able to contribut=e
more substantially.

I think that there's enough interest, know-how, support, and whatever els=e
is necessary in this group to do something like this. Is this "off-topic"=?
Maybe, but it could be strongly related to what we already do. Anyway, I
(and others, I think) would like to hear your thoughts on the topic.
Cheers, Adam Fikso

Dear G=C3=B6te,

Unfortunately I can already tell you that several members of section
Franchetiana INCLUDING candidissimum do NOT necessarily need a period
of low temps during their dormancy period. I have found with all 4
forms of candidissimum I grow and several forms of franchetianum that
they stick to their usual "internal clock" even when overwintered dry
at 15 C and break dormancy at their usual times...... Try growing it
from seed, maybe it will then adept more easily to your type of season?

Pascal
