Thanks to Pascal and Guy in particular for their clarifications. Guy, I
only have 2 flowers open so far, and both are bisexual. If your book
correctly describes A. flavum ssp. tibeticum, I don't think there's much
doubt that this is that species...it has the small spathe-tube, the large=and
horizontally held spathe, and the whole inflorescence is held well above
the emerging foliage (if you want some photos, e-mail me privately). It
*is* a blotched form (the "throat" is dark
inside). Anyway, for those who want to try it, it seems to grow easily i=n
a clayey loam amended with sand, at the top of a rock garden (so quite
well-drained) in full sun. Of course, our prolonged winter snow cover
makes a lot of fussy plants easy to grow.
Yes, folks, land here is *very* cheap, the summers are gorgeous, and the
town is laboring mightily to attract a new nuclear power plant. Buy in
now, while you still can...it's a great gardening climate...:-)
