Adam,

Many Lilium species are hypogeal germinators, not issuing a leaf until th=e
second year but producing a bulb below ground.  Scadoxus puniceus produce=s
a bulb at ground level the first year, only producing its first leaf some
months later.  You can see the bulb on that one though as they are sittin=g
at ground level.
