My sikokianums were the first to poke their "noses" up in the yard follow=ed
closely by ringens over a week ago, then amurense. However, seemingly
overnight (actually in the course of only several days), kishidae poked u=p
and has almost unfurled its spathe completely this morning. The triphyllu=ms
are now poking up and look like they will surpass the siks, amurense, and
ringens soon. Actually, my first Arisaema to bloom this year was my
engleri, from Kaichen last year as A-12, Arisaema sikokianum. This one wa=s
grown in coir pot, bloomed, and went dormant last summer. The whole dried
out pot was then placed in my refridgerator, but the darn thing wouldn't
wait till spring and started growing in February (that's still winter for
us here for all you Southern-Hemispherers). Its small bloom is still open
now so hopefully I can introduce its pollen into the unopened spathe of a
selected dark female triphyllum and then tie a paper bag over it to preve=nt
other cross-pollination.
I ordered griffithii, in case my garden planted ones (thanks Arno) don't
return, and speciosum from Wayside, then (forgot) and ordered speciosum a=nd
several tortuosums from Spring Hill. Funny thing, the (speciosum) tubers
came in the same exact packaging, item #, ect. with writing "packaged in
the Netherlands". Similar packaging on the griffithii (Wayside) and the
tortuosums (Spring Hill). These all came last week. Do they have the same
supplier (and are they less expensive?) The Wayside griffithii was starti=ng
to grow, as was the Spring Hill speciosum, and 2 of the 4 Spring Hill
tortuosums, with a shoot forming and extensive development of the root
collar. The other two tortuosums looked quiescent, still completely
dormant. Now on a bad note, and I don't want to slam any outfit, Wayside
sent only 1 rather than the 2 speciosums ordered, and it came with no sig=n
of growth commencing and the front half of its rhizome (tuber) rotted. (a=nd
where are my nepenthoides from Bulbmeister?)
On a good note Wayside has agreed to replace the rotted tuber with 2
healthy ones, as originally ordered. I hope they come fit and I wonder,
will they be in the process of starting growth as the other one was? I've
had trouble growing speciosum, only 1 of many ordered has ever sprouted f=or
me. That one now is several years old and reliably blooms in late May. I
was really counting on these new tubers as they are gifts for friends -
I'm trying to get them hooked and convert new Arisaemaphiles.
