Adam,

When you've finished experimenting, you might want to try Permatill.

Permatill is a Stalite Horticultural Aggregate manufactured by:
Carolina Stalite Corp.
PO Box 1037
Salisbury, NC 28145-1037
Toll Free 1-877-737-6284

Basically it's a particular form of exploded rock graded to a uniform
size slightly finer
than pea gravel. It's principle purpose is to break up heavy clay soil
and to add
moisture retention to the soil.

However, more people use it to repel voles than to fix the soil. You can
use
many additives to loosen the soil and add moisture retention, but they
all
invite moles & voles except Permatill.

It's sold in 2/4 cu ft bags (37.5 lbs) at garden centers and agricultural
supply houses.
Application rates depend on your soil but I just use several handfuls in
the planting
hole for shrubs and flowers.

Strangely enough, it really works.

Ray
