Adam,

I felt the mixed sizes would keep it water tight and I
wanted it to leak.

Have you tried /Zauschneria garrettii/? It has proven
hardy here in Minnesota. I just noticed it was still
blooming at the Lake Harriet Peace Garden yesterday.
