Actually, a concentrated enough solution of carbohydrates, eg. 30% sucrose,
will not freeze. I have observed Arisaema tubers, on ripening, excreting
moisture so that even dry soil around them becomes damp.The remaining
moisture in the tubers is in balance with stored carbohydrates in such a
ratio as to possibly prevent freezing damage. Temperate deciduous tree buds
use this mechanism.

I'm not certain sure about the glycerine in the tissues.  I assumed that
since it is the device by which many plants do not freeze in the winter,
and
assumed that it was true for Symplocarpus also.  Thanks for catching this.
