To get the best germination, Sarracenia seed need a cold, damp
stratification period. The mix I use for all my Sarracenia is 3 parts pl=ay
sand (from Home Depot) and 1 part milled sphagnum peat moss, although oth=er
proportions will work just as well. I like this proportion because the
extra sand provides a sturdy environment for the rhizome, which grows clo=se
to the surface.
Now back to stratification. Sow the seed on top of the mix, keep the pot
constantly damp by setting it in a tray of water and keep cool for 6 week=s.
The 6 weeks comes from experiments reported in the ICPS (International
Carnivorous Plant Society) newsletter a few years ago. A 4 week
stratification period gave good germination, 6 weeks gave the best and
beyond 6 weeks germination rate did not increase.
