Dear Arisaemaphiles,
Here in my central New Jersey coastal garden triphyllum and amurense were
first to bloom this year, about 2 weeks ago. Not all triphyllums are up
yet, I have a great variability in collected clones, some are just coming
up now. Of course stewardsonii (I'll call it a seperate species) will not
come till much later, most triphyllum blossoms will be long faded. The
amurense, and a few days later in another location angustatum, both look
very similar like squat five-leafed triphyllums and the inflorescences lo=ok
like green triphyllum, though the amurense inflorescences have more
pronounced white ribbing visible on the rear lower 2/3 of the spathe
exterior, similar to stewardsonii's but not as pronounced as that species.
Last week sikokianums and a single kishidae opened. Ringens are just now
starting to come up and open, though at my mom's yard (last year: "There'=s
a huge beetle on one of your plants!") in a more protected spot a very
large one has several blooms fully open with the growth of the clump
expanded and leaves out of the way for several days now.
Indoors a wilsonii has long finished blooming, but another Kaichen recent
import - "sikokianum" - looks like its opening up to be an engleri. The
leaves have interesting purple speckles. Finally, I have gotten a mature
griffithii. It had bloomed indoors and was stunning. Very sinister. Its
sister bulb (2 received this year) continues to remain dormant.
Did I miss any? It seems my nepenthoides are gone for good now, nor do I
see any of the triphyllum x taiwanense plantlets I had return last year. =I
will report on others as they come up.
Happy gardening!
