Yes, it definitely was a pathogen causing the rot. It did rain a lot that
week, but that did not affect them in the spring and I think the location
these particular species come from must experience a very dry summer afte=r
a brief wet spring. This, I've heard on the Trillium List, is what gives
difficulty to eastern US gardens growing western US Trilliums.

That is the first thing I though of too -- a bacterial or perhaps fungal
soft rot.
