Acrobat -- was phylogeny of Arisaema

Hello, Leo and others:
I have a brand new computer (emachines) equipped with Windows XP and it has
Adobe Acrobat and Reader on it and I still can 't figure out how to open the
attachments that Susanne recently sent. I can read and download files from
the web that say I need Acrobat Rader to read them, but, Susanne's
attachments won't open, (yet).
Your assessment may be accurate-- Leo, there is certainly some kind of
incompatibility, or information gap, but I don't think it's necessarily a
new machine. Could I transfer the eMail to another program in order to
open the attachments? like Microsoft Works? Anybody else?
While I'm at it, I'll mention that I also can't open the Corel files on
the AEG list of numbered archived publications. Some open easily, others,
not. There's probably a way around this, but I'm unable to even guess at
it being a newcomer to computers.
My current understanding is that some files cannot be opened unless one
knows what program sent them in order to accomodate one's program to that
system in order to be able to access them.
