fired clay

I use an industrial product made for light-weight
concrete used in bridges, parking ramps and
skyscrapers.
It's clay which has been cured in a rotary kiln.
It holds water well, releasing it slowly.
It comes in two sizes. The smaller is quite fine and I
use it like I would perlite.
The larger is probably half-inch (about 1 cm) and
looks like little wads of chewing gum in terra cotta.
I use it like a grit mulch or like pebbles with
paperwhites.
They are not available bagged. But concrete supply
places have been willing to sell (or give) me buckets
of the stuff.
Here it comes up the Mississippi River from Missouri
on barges.
