winter care in Pacific Northwest

Mary,

Cold is not the problem with dormant Arisaema, wet is. If the drainage is
very good, they'll survive winters in Canada with ease (excluding the few
tropical
species which most of us can't find anyway).

If excellent drainage cannot be arranged, one might resort to lifting the
tubers
and storing them at 40F, just slightly moist.

All that for mature tubers. We often store tuberlets in the frig for 2 months
to induce another growth cycle, but that's another subject and covered
in detail in the archives.

I'd be surprised if Andy Wong lifts the tubers at Asiatica which is in
Pennsylvania where winters make Georgian winters look practically tropical.
And I know Tony Avent doesn't lift his Arisaema in winter here in Raleigh, NC.

So, if commercial growers don't find it necessary, neither should you. Just
give them good drainage.

Ray
