Hi all,
I just received that back issue of Veld & Flora with the article on
Zantedeschia. The reference is:
Y. Singh, A.E. van Wyk, and H. Baijnath, "Know Your Arums", Veld & Flora
vol. 81 (2), pp. 54-55 (June, 1995).
They list the following species, with character traits that distinguish
them from each other:
aethiopica, odorata, albomaculata (ssp. albomaculata, macrocarpa, and
valida), rehmannii, jucunda, pentlandii, and elliottiana (which last they
say has never been found in the wild.)
Species odorata seems to be a lot like aethiopica, except that odorata has
a Freesia-like scent and deciduous foliage while aethiopica has only a very
slight scent and foliage that is generally evergreen. The article comments
that odorata must be kept dry in summer. Aside from aethiopica and
odorata, all the rest are pretty strictly summer-growing, winter dormant types.
Is it hard to get rehmannii to bloom incultivation? How about pentlandii?
By the way, the Zantedeschia seed should begin ripening in South Africa in
another month or two.
