There are two kinds of crosses, it seems to me.  One is directed to a
goal.  I want a big yellow spathe with a sky-seeking black spadix so I
cross species A and species M, sib-cross the offspring, back-cross to mam=a
etc.  Anything that doesn't meet my requirements gets composted.

The second kind is to investigate all possibilities. Alan Bremner did it
with Geranium and Josef Halda is doing it with Daphne.  Cross everything
with everything.  See what works.  You may still compost a lot, but you
will keep records of what happened.
