Hi All,
Petra, of course I remember you! In your e-mail you told me "the heck wit==
h hostas" (an old love of mine) and you wanted me to tell the group about==
my GIANT Arisaema triphyllum. Visitors have echoed your "the heck with h==
ostas" and they want to see the A. triphyllum so I am not offended by you==
r remark. I can look at hostas all year but to see one of these monsters ==
is a wonder. Many have doubted the existence of such a plant or its abili==
ty to remain a giant, but I found one and it is stable, i.e., it is gigan==
tic and remains so. I have not tried seed, because it off-sets like crazy==
, so why use seed. Here, as Petra wants me to, is the rest of the story: ==
In 1969 I found a large colony of the giant A. triphyllum in a deep ravin==
e cut by a creek in DeKalb County, Georgia. Then, I built my new home in ==
what was a rural area around Tucker. I raced to bulldozers to rescue as m==
any of the wildflowers as I could (with permission from the home builder)==
. I am glad I did because they are all gone now, overtaken by poison ivy ==
which came in when Opal knocked down a bunch of huge trees along the cree==
k. There used to be pink ladyslippers there. As I said, I have not tried ==
seed because the tubers send out quite a few offsets so why bother with s==
eed. The offsets also become tall specimens. I have several large plants ==
blooming right now, one about 48 inches the others around 41 to 44 inches==
with leaves that span 26 inches with individual leaflets 8 by 13 inches==
. The inflorescence is 7 inches tall and the spathe hood is 2.5 inches wi==
de at a height of 38 inches. The stem at ground level is 2.3 inches in di==
ameter. The hood is more erect than the smaller varieties which have a ho==
od that falls down and hides the spadix. These larger ones have the spath==
e tube wide open with the hood more erect and the spathe tip almost horiz==
ontal. Tony Avent has seen the tall ones several times during visits span==
ning several years. I gave him a very large (but not the largest) tuber a==
nd he has placed it into the capable hands of Petra Schmidt who just e-ma==
iled me to tell me how really big that thing is in Tony's trial bed. I ha==
ve had these wonderful jacks for over 30 years now and, believe me, they ==
have remained giants. I hope Petra gets propagation going and Tony can of==
fer these to all. Btw, the color of these giants is green, with the leafl==
ets a deep green with a bluish cast. I have not seen a maroon-striped inf==
lorescence. Currently I also have another large A. triphyllum which has p==
urple stems and 4 distinct leaflets, the center leaflet being two leaves ==
on separate stems. This one I found in Rabun County, Georgia, near Rabun ==
Bald on private property.
