Seedling ARISAEMA

Carolyn,

Over wintering Arisaema seedlings in Buffalo could be a problem.
The best scheme to date was developed by Craig Stubbs in Toronto just for
the
purpose of avoiding the usual losses. As a bonus, it will shorten the
time to
blooming size by at least a year.

Basically, it's a form of forcing by exposing the tuberlets to artificial
winters in
the refrigerator and the growing them again. Once they've done this once,
they're
at a size where survival in the real winter climate is more likely.

There are some proper procedures and the media is also critical when
doing this. All are
fully discussed in the Arisaema-L archives
<http://listserv.surfnet.nl/archives/arisaema-l.html>.

The seedlings will go dormant this year.
If you can keep them growing as long as possible, it will help. Ideally
they would
go dormant about 3 months before your springtime. Thus they would emerge
from
the cold treatment at the right time to resume their normal growing
season.

If you have further questions after you read the discussions, please ask.
