Mark,

The numbers like [DJHC 445] are nursery accession numbers and have no
other meaning.
They do let you trace a strain if the offspring are labeled [EX-DJHC 445]
for example.

Since you're starting out, you'd do well to develop and use your own
accession numbering
scheme and to keep track of your plants this way.

I use the scheme I copied from Guy Gusman. [GRS01234] would stand for the
234th new plant
received by GRS (me) in the year 01 (2001). There's an obvious flaw in
this system for
people who received plants in 1901 and also in 2001. Or those who get
plants this year
and plan to receive more in the year 3001. I have neither problem.

With the advent of the PC and Lotus 1-2-3, these scheme's are really
practical. I also
use a stylized plot map in 1-2-3 to automatically cross reference the
plants and their
locations in my nurseries. I'm also working on a landscape map for
locating things
more accurately in the gardens. That's a bit more of a challenge it
seems.
