Dear Ray, and all other Arisaema-L friends,

OK, OK, I know when I'm beaten. I've signed up for a Hotmail account so t=hat=

I can send postings to Ariseama-L without all of the garbage that AOL ema=il
puts into them. Ray, is it possible for you to keep my AOL email address =as
the one where my Ariseama-L postings arrive??? I think I will find it har=d t=
o
remember to check the Hotmail account.

Now then, the most interesting email arrived here yesterday from G=F6te=
Svanholm [In middle Sweden (59 degrees north)] in response to my posting =on
Moles. G=F6te replied directly to me because G=F6te's postings are no=t showi=
ng up
on the List. Perhaps the email ISP is sending garbled messages.

Also, G=F6te, I tried to "Reply" to you, but the "Daemon" [the carrier-=back =
of
undelieverable email "addressee unknown"] sent my response back to me. So=I
think you may have some other ISP problem.

G=F6te's suggestions about taking care of moles was so comprehensive an=d
thoughtful that I wanted to post it to Ariseama-L for everyone's benefit.

BTW, if you are one of the persons who corresponds with me off-list, plea=se
remember to use my AOL address for that mail. Thanks.

Here are the great Mole Destructor directions. They look better than usin=g
the ol' mallett!

Dear Jean,
I send this directly since I have not yet made the effort to find out why=my
messages to the list never appear there.
I have no moles nor chipmunks but I do have voles.
Moles feed on earthworms and similar creatures so they do not harm our
Arisaemas or other "bulbs" except by mistake.
Voles are rodents. They can clean out a collection of lilies or tulips or =a
potato plot in no time at all. They also move bulbs to storage caverns.
There are many "Cures" around like
digging down glass which is a good way of cutting fingers of unsuspecting
gardeners.
or:
Planting smelly bulbslike Fritillaria imperialis - I tried. They did not =eat
the frits but Liliums two inches away.
or:
Putting down a littlewindmill so the vibrations disturb. That is too far
fetced even for me.=A0
or
Using poison. The one available seem to make their furs sleek, their bell=ies
round, and their offspring numerous.
or
Using gas (acetylene). This is a good way of converting their tunnels to
trenches but they are still there.
Unfortunately they usually are discovered when they have eaten all bulbs =and
are moving to the next bulb border anyway. This is is the reason why peop=le
believe in all these useless cures.
There is only one way. A trap like an oversize moustrap. The procedure is=as
follows
Step #1:=A0=A0 Inspection of the garden in the early mornig and findi=ng a li=
ttle
pile of earth in the wrong place.
#2 dig it out to see if there is a tunnel beneath. If No: happiness. If y=es:
leave it open.
#3 Come back four hours later. Voles do not like drafts so if the tunnel =is
inhabited it is now blocked. Is in not blocked, they are gone elsewhere
(look under your liliums! do they still have bulbs ?)
#4 dig up the tunnel again. Use your hands so they acquire earth smell.
#5 put down the trap with piece of Carrot or (better if you can spare the=m)
tuber of Crocus or Freesia. Preferably so they nearly 'have to' step in i=t.
Best in a tunnel junction.
#6 MOST IMPORTANT Put a box or basin or little tub over the trap and the
hole and fill all holes with soil so there is no draft nor light.
#7 Take out dead vole in the evening and leave hole open in case they wer=e
two. They seldom are. Voles are eremites.
#7 go back to #3
If the vole was too clever and filled the trap with sand your trap probab=ly
smelled to much of human. Or there was a draft or he /she/it was to busy
tunneling to care for the carrot. If this hapens. Go back to #4. I have
never had to repeat the procedure more than twice.
Good hunting!
