Tom,

Arisaema are noted for remaining dormant for a season when stressed the
prior
season. They often will revert to male form for the same reason.

I'd say the rainfall differences you note are more than likely the cause
of the variation in numbers of A. triphyllum showing each year.

As an experiment, mark a few spots where plants, particularly the ladies,
are
growing the next time drought strikes. Then look in the next two years to
see if they stayed dormant for a year and then revived, possibly in the
male state.
