Well, it isn't zone 4...more like borderline 7/8...but my A. italicum
has been coming back in its northeasterly exposure for five years now,
blooming once and not multiplying (I think the grass guy mowed the
infloresence).  Sandy soil.  In Charlottesville, zone 7, clayey 'soil'
southerly exposure with pm shade, it lasted three years only, never bloom=ing.
Both sites are fairly damp locations adjacent to rampant hosta growth
and were planted in autumn.
