I have heard before that cleaning arisaema berries can be hard on the
fingers, but had always pooh-poohed it, becasue the worse I had ever
suffered was a 'tingley' feeling that didn't last very long. However, I
recently cleaned some A. taiwanense berries (a couple of nice sized heads=)
and, even though it was a little prickley feeling, I didn't go get the
surgical gloves. Well, my fingers were pretty sore for about three or fou=r
days, on the tips where I was squeezing with the right hand and between t=he
fingers on the left had where I was holding the squished berries and
separating them from the skins. About a week later I actually lost some s=kin
as in a mild sunburn, from both areas.

I do not tend to be very allergic in general and suspect 'spicules' are t=he
culprit. Anyway, people might want to take the precaution of wearing
surgical gloves while doing the cleaning. It is a little more tedious, bu=t
might save some discomfort.

Seems like it ought to be red pepper unless the berries were very old.

I don't soak my berries so I can't really comment. I just remove the pulp
by hand and
then clean the seeds in detergent. It's a reasonable practice if you
don't have too
many seedheads to do, but not practical otherwise.
