Seems like it ought to be red pepper unless the berries were very old.

I don't soak my berries so I can't really comment. I just remove the pulp
by hand and
then clean the seeds in detergent. It's a reasonable practice if you
don't have too
many seedheads to do, but not practical otherwise.
