David,

Arisaema thunbergii has 3 subspecies: ssp. thunbergii & ssp. urashima fro=m
Japan and the autumn-flowering ssp. autumnalis from Taiwan. In the trade =A.
thunbergii ssp. urashima is sometimes offered as "urashima" and A.
thunbergii ssp. thunbergii as "thunbergii". The main difference between s=sp.
urashima and ssp. thunbergii is that the spadix-appendix inside the flowe=r
in ssp. urashima is smooth and that of ssp. thunbergii is "wrinkled" so y=ou
have to look inside the flower to see the difference. Look at the "naught=y
bits" and all is revealed..... (right Wilbert?)

I have A. thunbergii and urashamii (please forgive my misspelling; it's
coming from memory) from Asiatic and saw in one of the Arisaema documents
that they are synonyms. Is this true. The one obvious difference is tha=t
one flower is flush with the ground while the other is raised on a stem
several inches. I haven't looked more closely to floral parts to see if
other differences exist.
