I don't know if I should confess to this in case I'm reported to the
SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Arisaemas) but I think I
may have stressed Eric's A. consanguineum 97/98 seedlings. They were
potted on into 3 inch pots, two to a pot, after germination in the
spring of 98. My intention was to put them out into the garden this
spring but I've only just got round to it today. The corms are not large
- less than 2 cm - but each one has up to 6 enormous 'stolons' about 5
mm diam terminating in what looks like a forming corm. They erupted
upwards from the top surface of the corm, came out of the pot, did a U-
turn and went back down again, total length up to 6 inches.
None of the other consanguineum seedlings from my wild-collected seed or
Roy Herold's seed shows this phenomenon. Is it stress? or is it a
characteristic of that form of A. consanguineum, Eric? I hope this has
not already been discussed and I've missed it.
Meantime, it looks as if it could be a good year for seed here in the
west of Scotland.
