Subject: Re: seed stratification?
Lois,
I believe that Arisaema do not require cold stratification to germinate.
With regard to the 3 species
you mention:
Arisaema japonicum is most probably A. serratum v. serratum. It has
germinated many times here
at rates close to 100% without stratification.
Arisaema urashima I have no records on this one, but A. thunbergii ssp.
urashima germinates without.
Arisaema yamatense v. sugimotoi germinated; 1995 - 60% in 31 days; 1996 -
100% in 42 days
both without stratification.
One of the problems with damp cold stratification is that the seeds
germinate readily at 40F.
so you'd have to keep a constant eye on them.
If memory serves me right, Norman Deno discovered that Arisaema do not
benefit from cold
stratification and published the results in his books on seed
germination.
However, I must admit my results with Alplains seeds have been less that
wonderful.
