Confirmed!!!! They hate wet feet when dormant. Wait until the new growth
emerges
before giving them water.
Furthermore, I don't think moisture plays a major role in determining
when they break dormancy.
I suspect it has more to do with the ground temperature or even the time
of year. Each species
has it's own timetable and some insist on emerging before the last frost
only to be creamed.
So much for ground temperature. However, I succeeded in keeping A.
ringens from being decimated
each spring by moving the plants from the south slope behind our house to
the foundation on
the north side where the ground stays cold much longer.
