Jim,
Barry Yinger was selling this at last winter's Eastern Winter Study Weekend
in Raleigh. The picture he had of it looked identical to Pinellia
tripartita atropurpurea, and the tubers were of average tripartita size. He
said he had obtained it from Harold's garden, and had subsequently named it
after him. When asked what made it unique (and what warranted a $20 price
tag), he said it was larger and more vigorous than the type. I have a
sneaking suspicion that 'Harold Epstein' and atropurpurea are the same
thing, but I will defer to anyone who has grown the two side by side.
My own atropurpurea, grown from NARGS seed, certainly isn't lacking in
vigor, and I wonder how it could be improved.
