Duncan,
I described the size in my earlier posting but not what it is. A growing
sleeve is just like a pot except
the bottom is completely open (except sometimes for two cross straps to
keep the shape). Thus
the roots of the plant are free to grow down into the medium below the
sleeve, yet the tuber and/or
root crown is contained in the sleeve and easily moved and/or removed.
And, as I said, the offsets are
kept with the plant when it is moved/removed. Since the plant is within
the sleeve which can be lifted
out of the growing bed, there's no chance of slicing up the tuber.

Because the ones I use are square, they can be placed with sides touching
to completely fill an area with no
wasted space. They come in sizes as small as 1.5" square x 2" deep, but I
prefer the 3 9/16 square x 4 1/4 deep size because it's large enough to
grow-on many plants, particularly Arisaema.
