Subject: The message to which I answered

Here's John's post that came to me instead of Arisaema-L. Most
interesting.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------=----------------
A good friend tells me that Arisaema enneaphyllum (see below) is common =
on Mt. Elgon (Kenya/Uganda) and on the Cherangani hills, flowering in =
July/August. His photos certainly show it as a handsome & desirable =
plant. I've never seen any Arisaemas in East Africa, but not for want of
=
hope or looking! The nearest I came was Sauromatum venosum on Mt. Rungwe
=
in southern Tanzania; an elephant-researcher friend showed me a photo of
=
a beatiful Amorphophallus (prob. abyssinicus) growing in Tsavo National =
Park (Kenya).

For anyone who obtains plants of these East African species, bear in =
mind that their natural habitat is COOL forest, not steamy jungle. No =
frost, however, but nights certainly less than 10 deg C during their =
growing season, & days probably seldom more than about 20 deg. Many =
plants perch as epiphytes in these forests, growing in pockets of debris
=
and moss.

As an advanced advertisement, I can announce that I am leading an Alpine
=
Garden Society tour to East African mountains in June 1999. No aroids =
guaranteed, but lots of wonderful plants! Any member of the AGS can =
come.
