Subject: Tropical Arisaema

OK you hot-house types. Here's the hot scoop from S.J. Mayo via his
publication, Flora of Tropical East Africa, ISBN 90 6191 322 5. Thanks to
AEG member Rogan Roth we have a copy of same.

Mayo lists the following species of Arisaema from tropical Africa:

A. enneaphyllum - to 120 cm tall, leaves usually 2, flowers above leaves,
spathe 9-19 cm long, green with white stripes, limb sometimes more than
twice the length of the tube, white outside, white & green striped
inside. From Karamoja District in Uganda and Trans-Nzoia District in
Kenya. Habitat upland forest, bracken areas, bamboo zone: 2300-3000m. For
you "Out of Africa" types, it even grows in the Masai district.

A. mildbraedii - 1.2 m tall [a big one] leaves 1-2, green
crimson-speckled psudostem, flowers at or above leaves, spathe 7-23 cm
long, green with cream-yellow to white stripes, limb much longer than
tube with a long filamentous tip. From Uganda and Kenya in upland
forest, bamboo zone, typically in very damp shaded areas at 1400-2500m.

A. ruwenzoricum - To 120 cm tall. Leaves 2, 16-28 cm long, glaucous green
with white, yellow, or purplish stripes. From Uganda in bamboo and
eracaceous zones in damp shaded sites. SOMETIMES EPIPHYTIC amongst moss
in tree trunks. Wow!! That sounds Floridian.

A. schimperianum - To 200 cm tall (look out Amorphs, here it comes).
Leaves 3 or 3, forming a green psudostem to 75 cm or more. Flowers at
leaf level or above, Spathe 8-31 cm long.green with white to yellow
stripes with a very long filamentous tip. From Uganda, Ethiopia in open
forest or thicket margins, 1800-2800m.

A. ulugurense - from the Ulugu Mts., Tanzania - to 100 cm tall, leaves
1-2, greenish-brownish-red psudostem, flowers at leaf-level, spathe 16-28
cm long, outer surface pale green sometimes with reddish markings.
Habitat in the montane bushland and forest at 2000-2400 m.

Now, if we only could find a source. Anyone for safari??
