MJ - sounds like your five free-floating tubers are offsets of the parent
tuber.  When the offsets are ripe, a skin forms between them and the
parents; as the season ends, the skin sloughs off and disintegrates, and
the little tuber is on its own.  The firmly attached bumps you see are
next year's offsets.  DON'T try to sever them.
