Jim and fellow AEGers
I have received several private postings regarding chick grit
referred to in the discussions on tuber storage. They all ask-What is it??????
Chick Grit comes from North Carolina. It is sold by the Mt. Airy
North Carolina Granite Corp. NC 27030.It is described on the package as;Mt.
Airy Gran-i-Grit ,Crushed Granite,Starter grade. It is about twice the size
of the gravel one would put in the bottom of a budgie cage.I am sure it must
come from many other sources as well under different names.Starter grade
refers to the particle size and the same product comes in two larger sizes
which would probably be great for drainage in pot bottoms etc.Because it is
granite it is not only inert but retains very little water. For my
applications turface retains too much water.
Ellen Hornig, spreader of much useful seed starting information,
first made me aware of the uses of chick grit.I buy it from farm co ops and
feed suppliers and I continue to experiment with it.Try it.....yu'll like it.
