Finally surfacing from my swamp of work for a few moments of relaxation
...
Arisaema germination: after several years of at best mediocre
germination, I adopted the "Hornig pre-soak" (since that's where I first
heard of this method) and had dramatically better results. I did consider
the issue of lack of oxygen during the soak and attempted to compensate
by using a wide dish and very shallow water level and changing the water
at least once a day (and using thoroughly aerated water). In fact, I now
use this method - varying the length of the soak and sometimes
accompanied by other things, such as scarification - for most of the
seeds I sow and am generally happy. Arisaemas usually get a 2-day soak.
Don't know my current germination rate without digging through the data
and doing some arithmetic, except that it isn't as good as Ray's!
